The Estate

The Yiniets vineyards are Greece’s highest; clinging to the slopes of Mount Pindus in an area where the vines mature slowly.

Yiniets, which means ‘vineyard’ in the local Vlach dialect, is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Traminer, Vlachiko and Debina. The grapes are usually harvested in early to mid-October.

History

Katogi Averoff began life in the late nineteen fifties, when Evangelos Averoff planted Greece’s first Cabernet Sauvignon vines on the slopes of Mount Pindus and bottled the wine now known as Katogi Averoff in the "katogi" (lower storey) of his home in Metsovo.

With a vision to create "French vines in Greek mountain soil" Averoff's wine-making activities transformed Pindus's abandoned slopes into vineyards, thereby reviving a viticultural tradition which had flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries.

With the help of experts from Greece and France, Averoff created one of Greece’s most celebrated and elevated vineyards, establishing Katogi SA in 1989. Katogi’s red wine, quickly made a name for itself both in Greece and abroad, where it won a number of international awards. The cultivation of native Greek grapes and blending traditional Greek and international varieties was the next step.

Evangelos Averoff died in 1990, but Katogi Averoff SA continued to develop in accordance with the philosophy of its founder under its managing director, Sotiris Ioannou. New vineyards were planted around Metsovo, and the company continued to experiment with new grape varieties and new blends of wine.

Katogi Averoff SA was now firmly established as a dynamic young company with solid foundations, high-quality products and a contemporary, forward-looking approach.

Philosophy

Katogi Averoff S.A. is one of the most dynamic wine production companies in Greece. It has over 60 hectares of vineyards at its disposal in Metsovo, Macedonia, the Peloponese and Attica along with wineries in Metsovo, Anavyssos and Nemea. The company maintains investment in its vineyards, its winemaking facilities and its personnel and produces wines from both Greek and international grape varieties. The company has embraced two core principles: firstly, its wine-producing activities should be as environmentally-friendly as possible; secondly, it must do all it can to fully utilize its human and natural resources.

Furthermore, the company has prioritized the development of wine tourism, setting up its own model wine-tourism centre in Greece.

The company is also involved in the active promotion of culture, and seeks to combine art with its wine-orientated activities whenever possible. Katogi Averoff SA is the main sponsor of the E. Averoff Gallery, and funds a range of artistic events staged by other organizations.

Since 2014 the company’s  management has been taken up by the next generation of stakeholders, under the direction of Alexandros Ioannou, whose vision for the estate's wine and wine tourism focuses on reclaiming the history shaped by his grandfther, Evangelos Averoff.
